(A Golden Shovel Based on “The Jewel” by James Wright)
It is closing
in, a pulse, a sound, around
the secret chamber that holds a
corner of my stretching soul, a blossom
growing into a flame of
hopeful, soothing fire
This is the new self my
old one asked for, turning broken bones
into jewels, which turn
into love, that take me to
a bird that flies unencumbered out a dark
cave, and carries the sun to buried emeralds.
