Justice for Pride’s Sake (love don’t hate) by Elizabeth Ayala

Read by Conner Arnold

The odd body was lying there, lifeless
Those rendered blue eyes remained open wide
As if something was left to be said
Maybe a question: “Why?”
Cherry lipstick colored in the cracked, chapped lips
And the smothered mouth that consumed “immortal ways and its vile sips”
The corpse laid upon the floor, half naked
All its sufferings have come to an end
Satisfying everlasting hatred
The blonde wig hid the rest of the pale face
The caring heart stopped beating at its glorious pace
Veins which once contained warm blood
Now shriveled by cold prejudice
Why would someone commit such an inequitable action?
The psychotic reason for this has not yet been revealed
Nor a simple reaction
Yet the person appeared there, ceasing to exist
Defending themselves was no simple risk
But it would have come to no avail
Because this criticized, rejected human
Was a transgender female
