chase sunsets, not boys by Leah Ostermann
Read by Conner Arnold
Although the sun sets every
night you may not see its colors in full
but I tell you, that’s how the sun pulls you in
and gets you to want more
Regardless of its painted skies
my heart always feels whole
and I’m never left feeling dull
because when the sun sets
it is a feeling that is incomparable
When the sunset shines its glorious rays
I pray that the colors never fade
because if I’m deprived of the sun setting
it leaves me in a constant craze
Without the sun setting on the poles
I feel like I need a hand to hold
because earth just feels like it’s spinning out of control
Even when the sun is gone
I feel it’s kisses on my skin
my moles are a constant reminder
that’s why I always feel a warmth within
I’d chase the sun to the ends of the earth just to watch it set
I’m telling you, I would run and run
because without the sun setting
I don’t feel like there is air in my lungs
After years of chasing and having fun I must admit
I’m wrong, there’s no need to run
although I was searching for the sunset, I put it above love
because I know I won’t let my guard fall when push comes to shove
But see, I know my soul can’t be controlled
and that’s what keeps this game from getting old
I don’t take the advice I’m told
but that’s because I just don’t fit a mold
The sun has let me turn my back to society’s norms
and allowed my heart to come undone
but finding someone to do the same
so I don’t have to run, is easier said than done
I know one day this will be a familiar tune I used to hum
and I will feel no need to chase the sun
I’ll find the one that can match my pace
the one who will look at my face and say
“there is no need to chase”
But for now, I’m going to chase the sunset
I’m going to feel the lights last embrace
because it’s better than chasing a boy that will destroy my heart
just because he can’t keep up with my pace
