A Poem in Golden Shovel Style
Inspired by Matsuo Bashō’s poem
Slam! White door shuts; I turn to the street. In
the lack of direction, I embrace the
gray concrete. White stars break twilight,
Mai-Tai drunken skies. Gentle pebbles of rain
tinkle against the stone walkway; these
rocks gather and stream into sewer drains. Brilliant-hued
roses of scarlet, carmine, honey, wet with contentment. Hibiscus
flowers retract into stiff juniper leaves; the unlucky few pelted. A
petal weeps, descending. Lovely
black ants delight in this! They hide underneath, waiting for sunset.
