As Trees Pass

CSU Channel Islands' Literary Journal

by Nathan Porter

The trees pass by me on either side
My car and I traverse the mountain descent
Each tree has time to introduce itself
Coffee bark and needle leaves
Their perfume pouring through the open window
What do I feel?

I descend this mountain
I leave behind a year long relationship
My first love
My first kiss
My first break-up
I feel nothing

I can’t even cry
I think I should, but it just isn’t there
I watch trees pass by
I smell sweet mountain air
Listening to songs on a portable speaker
A replacement she gave me

for a broken car stereo
