does my mental health make me a villain(elle)? by Amanda Condon

CSU Channel Islands' Literary Journal

living mentally ill is like perennially climbing up a steep hill
i know that you want to believe that you can be my superhero, but
i’m not an empty glass for you to fill

i think this might be a bit of overkill
how can i make it more clear-cut?
living mentally ill is like perennially climbing up a steep hill

let me just lay here and drink my chamomile
i can learn to keep my mouth shut
i’m not an empty glass for you to fill

the pounding in my head is like a drill
there are days where i feel better, somewhat
living mentally ill is like perennially climbing up a steep hill

if i feel any pain i’ll drown it out with advil
and then maybe i won’t feel like a robot
i’m not an empty glass for you to fill

i’m very good at staying completely still
but when the time comes, i’m ready to strut
living mentally ill is like perennially climbing up a steep hill
i’m not an empty glass for you to fill
